Thomson Gale, part of The Thomson Corporation, has incorporated OpenURL connectivity into several of its Resource Centers. Support for OpenURL inbound linking is planned for the end of September 2004, while support for outbound linking will be released in two phases over the next two months. The OpenURL linking is intended to direct a user toward the discovery of relevant information included in the library's collection of electronic resources. It also provides OpenURL vendors with direct access to journal content in Thomson Gale's Resource Centers. Many academic and consortium customers use OpenURL services to facilitate integration and access across their collection of electronic resources.

Thomson Gale Resource Center databases included in the OpenURL upgrade are: Business & Company Resource Center, Health and Wellness Resource Center, Literature Resource Center, Biography Resource Center, Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center, Student Resource Center, Student Resource Center - College Edition, History Resource Center, and Science Resource Center.

Sometimes referred to as a "knowledge discovery" tool, OpenURL Resolvers are systems that are designed to optimize the research process by automatically selecting relevant information based on the context of a user's search query. An OpenURL system consists of a context-sensitive, electronic resource installed and configured to run on a library computer. In order to take advantage of OpenURL linking, libraries must purchase the software through an OpenURL vendor.
