Google Launches Site Search Service for Business
Millions of businesses have a Web presence but offer users no ability to search their site. While many of these businesses invest in search advertising and search engine optimization to help customers find their business, customers are left on their own to navigate content once they land on a site. With remote hosted search (Software as a Service, or SaaS), sites can add a search field to each page; when a user types a query, the form sends it to the search service, which retrieves matching pages from that site stored in the index and returns a results list to the site. Search engine consultant Avi Rappaport reports on Google's foray into the space, with a service starting at only $100 for sites with less than 5000 pages to be indexed.

Featured Content: Special Delivery--Mobile Enterprise Search Coming on Strong
Mobile search is this year’s mega-trend, and with good reason. Search—which is already the de facto entry point to content in the online space, with more than half of all users going straight for the search box when they want to find a website—has also become the primary means to access and monetize the legendary “long tail” of content. Moving forward, mobile search, like its stationary online counterpart, is destined to be the core capability required to get individuals to the content they seek. What's it have to do with the enterprise? Lots! Read all about it in this article written for the Enterprise Search Center by Peggy Anne Salz. Free PDF.

Featured Content: The Death of Modern (Information) Architecture
Pruitt-Igoe, a housing project built in the 1950s in St. Louis, Missouri, was a spectacular architectural failure. Neither its thoroughly modern design, nor its latest technologies, nor even critical acclaim could save it. The architects doomed the project by failing to take into account the way people actually lived. It's often said that the demolition of Pruitt-Igoe was the death of modern architecture. More people-centered architecture followed. The advent of Web 2.0, though lacking a good demolition event, will be remembered as the death of modern information architecture. In its place we'll see a new usercentered approach that provides information tailored to the user's perspective—even as that perspective changes. Featured Content: Search Finds Usability with the Right Information Architecture
Search is not being deployed in the enterprise as a fundamental corporate platform, but as a fragmented function. Between thrashing amid multiple applications and interfaces and the "processing" of irrelevant information, users experience loss of time, loss of focus, and loss of productivity. Is it any wonder that satisfaction with current corporate search environments is so low? The solution to this situation is not the selection of the "right" search tool or even in search technology per se. The solution, observes consultant Carl Frappaolo in this Enterprise Search Center exclusive article, lies in the understanding that search is a component part of an overall organizational strategy and a commitment to an Information Architecture. The efficiency and effectiveness of the search experience is maximized when it is addressed holistically, as part of an organization-wide strategy to content management, embodied in an Information Architecture. There are a number of fundamental principles that underpin the design and delivery of successful search.
